Deep Adjustment in Global Trade Patterns: Challenges and Paths Forward for Multilateralism

Structural changes in the global trading system

In recent years, the global trade pattern has been undergoing the most profound adjustment since World War II. Unilateralism and trade protectionism are on the rise, the multilateral trading system is facing severe challenges, and international economic and trade rules are in a critical period of reshaping. These changes will not only affect the short-term trend of international trade, but will also profoundly shape the global business landscape in the coming decades.

Novaris Business Development Society analyzed the changing characteristics of the current global trade environment from the following dimensions:

  • The normalization of trade friction:Trade disputes between major economies have expanded from individual areas to multiple levels such as technology, investment, and standards. Trade frictions have become long-term and normalized.
  • Regional trade agreements accelerate:In the context of multilateral negotiations being in trouble, bilateral and regional trade agreements have become the main channels to promote trade liberalization.
  • The risk of technological decoupling rises:Export controls and investment reviews in key technology fields are becoming increasingly strict, and global technology cooperation faces the risk of fragmentation.
  • Trade rules evolve towards high standards:New issues such as digital trade, environmental standards, labor rights, and state-owned enterprises are becoming the focus of negotiations on international economic and trade rules.

Corporate response strategies

Facing an increasingly complex global trade environment, companies need to improve their strategic response capabilities. The Institute recommends that enterprises focus on the following aspects: First, establish a normalized trade policy monitoring mechanism to promptly obtain and analyze information on policy changes that affect their own business. Secondly, evaluate and optimize global business layout to reduce over-reliance on a single market or supply source.

Third, strengthen the construction of the compliance management system, especially in high-risk areas such as export control, sanctions compliance, and cross-border data. Fourth, actively participate in industry associations and policy advocacy activities, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises through collective voice. The Institute believes that although the current global trade environment is full of uncertainties, the basic trend of economic globalization has not been reversed. Those companies that can flexibly respond to changes and actively adjust their strategies can still find and seize development opportunities in the global market.
