Digital Transformation of Asia-Pacific SMEs: Challenges, Pathways and Breakthroughs

The urgency of digitalization for SMEs
Small and medium-sized enterprises are an important pillar of the Asia-Pacific region's economy, contributing more than 50% of GDP and more than 60% of jobs in most economies. However, in the wave of digitalization, the transformation process of small and medium-sized enterprises obviously lags behind that of large enterprises. This gap is threatening their long-term competitiveness and survival space.
Novaris Business Development Society conducted a survey of small and medium-sized enterprises in eight major markets in the Asia-Pacific region and found that although more than 85% of small and medium-sized enterprise operators recognize the importance of digital transformation, they face multiple obstacles in the actual promotion process:
- Financial constraints:Limited financial strength makes it difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises to afford large-scale digital investments, especially in an environment where economic downward pressure is increasing.
- Lack of talent:The lack of professionals with digital skills is one of the biggest bottlenecks facing SMEs, especially small ones.
- Lack of knowledge:Many small and medium-sized enterprises still only understand digital transformation at the level of "purchasing software" and lack systematic transformation planning and implementation capabilities.
- Solution not suitable:Most of the digital solutions on the market are designed for large enterprises. They are expensive and have redundant functions, making it difficult to meet the "lightweight, flexible, and low-cost" needs of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The way to break the situation
The Institute believes that the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises requires a different path strategy from that of large enterprises. First of all, a gradual transformation approach of "small steps and quick runs" should be adopted, starting from the business links with the most prominent pain points and the fastest results, and gradually accumulating digital capabilities and experience. Secondly, make full use of cloud services and SaaS models to reduce technical thresholds and initial investments to achieve rapid acquisition of digital capabilities. Third, actively participate in the industry’s digital ecosystem and make up for its own resource shortages through platform cooperation, data sharing, etc.
At the policy level, governments of various economies should also increase support for the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises, including providing special subsidies and tax incentives, building public digital service platforms, and launching digital skills training projects. Only the two-wheel drive of policy support and market innovation can truly promote the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises to achieve substantial breakthroughs.
